What This Site Records

Some information arrives without you doing anything: standard web-server and analytics records covering IP address, device, browser, rough location and pages viewed. Other information arrives because you sent it — newsletter signups, comment fields, and email correspondence.

There is one niche-specific commitment behind this policy — we ask readers not to send us sensitive personal details, and we delete rather than retain anything of that kind that reaches us unprompted.

Data Lifespan and Security

Anything we hold has a limited life: it is kept while needed for the purpose it was collected for, then removed or allowed to expire. We use access controls and encryption in transit, and take reasonable steps overall, while being clear that no method of transmission or storage is entirely secure.

Exercising Your Rights

Depending where you live, you may have the right to see what we hold, correct it, have it deleted, take a copy elsewhere, object to certain processing, or opt out of your data being sold or shared for advertising. The parties that may receive data are our hosting provider, any analytics service in use, the email platform behind the newsletter, and advertising networks where advertising is served. Advertising and analytics vendors generally act as independent controllers; the rest act as processors on our instruction.

Age of Readers

The content and the site are for adults. Children under 13, or under 16 depending on jurisdiction, are not the intended audience, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. Discovering that we had would prompt deletion.
